Grant Types and Rules
General Rules
Currently, we are limiting grant requests to no more than $1,000 U.S. Dollars. This ensures that we can provide help to the greatest number of people who need it.
In order to recieve a grant from us you must:
Be Jewish, a permanent resident or citizen of the United States
Over 18 Years of Age
In need of assistance
Loans
While we hope eventually to offer free loans as well, we are presently asking our grantees to consider donating back the money they received when their fortunes turn around.
Grant Types
Emergency Expense Grants
These grants are the most common type of grant we offer and they provide low income Jews with the money they need to make it past an unexpected expense, such as medical emergencies, death in the family and the like.
Work Grants
We provide grants of this type for low income Jews who need a hand in getting a job. Typical expenses include buying uniforms or a new suit for interviews. Grants may also be made for special circumstances, such as when someone needs to travel for an interview.
Making it On My Own Grants
These grants are intended for those who are permanently disabled and who have a special one time expense that needs to be funded, such as purchasing a wheelchair or crutches.
Non-Profit Grants
These grants help small Jewish organizations facing short term financial difficulties so that they can continue to provide services to their clients. In order to guarantee that the organization will not become dependent our services, they are (along with all other types of grants) limited to one time grants only.
Occasion Grants
These are grants for happy occasions where a low income Jew just needs a leg up. These grants may for example partially fund a wedding or bar or bat mitzvahs.
Important:
Please remember that all grants provided by HelpThisJew have two components:
1.They are only offered once, and for unusual expenses (i.e. We do not provide money to buy groceries for the month, but if you need to buy groceries for an engagement party or Sheva Brachot, we would provide a grant for that purpose). In addition, we will pay a regular expense if it is in arrears (e.g. you are three months behind on mortgage payments) or it is unusually large (e.g. your child was visiting Israel on Birthright and you got stuck with a $700 phone bill when your usual bills only run around $100).
2.Grants need not be paid back. Our donors do not expect to ever receive the money back from you and in fact are incapable of doing so through our system. However, we do hope that once you are back on your feet financially, you will consider making a donation back to HelpThisJew so that we can continue to help others in need.
